Remembering John Hughes

On August 6, 2009 the world lost a great filmmaker in John Hughes. The man wrote, directed and produced some of the best 80’s and 90’s teen comedies.

This is a great tribute video made by jodieisagoodname:

Challenge Update #1-4: Best Quote

Best Quote

“The strength of the vampire is that people will not believe in him.” – Van Helsing

Not as well-known as the “children of the night” quote, but I think it’s better. It’s true and it’s actually a little frightening.

The Evil Dead

“Soon all of you will be like me… And then who will lock you up in a cellar?” – Deadite

No cool Ash line in this one, so I went for this quote. The deadite locked in the cellar really knows how to creep people out.

“I can see you dirty pillows. Everyone will.” – Mom

This is a more silly quote, but I couldn’t really find any good badass lines in Carrie. The mom here doesn’t like Carrie’s dress because it has a little cleavage and so everyone will see her ‘dirty pillows’.

King Kong

“Oh no, it wasn’t the airplanes. It was beauty killed the beast.” – Denham

A great quote and featured on the AFI 100 years, 100 quotes list at nr. 84.

“Who’s going to believe a talking head? Get a job in a freakshow.” – Herbert West

Another “funny” quote, this time Herbert West is talking to Dr. Hill, who he has just decapitated and then brought back to life.

“Death has come to your little town, sheriff.” Dr. Loomis

Obviously Loomis is talking about Michael Myers. Death is a suitable nickname for that psycho.

“This is Ripley, last survivor of the Nostromo, signing off.” – Ripley

Great line and the last of the movie. It reminds you that everybody is dead (except her and the cat) and that she is alone drifting in space.

Black Christmas

“These broads would hump the leaning tower op Pisa if they could get up there!” – Mrs. MacHenry

I would love to see that.

“We accept you, one of us! Gooble gobble!” – The Freaks

As Cleopatra marries one of the freaks she got this song as a welcoming gift to their little “family”. She didn’t like it, to say the least.

“It will cost you sweat and tears, and perhaps… A little blood.” – Knock

Quotes are rare in silent movies but Nosferatu has quite a few. This one I liked the best.

But which is the best line of them all?

Just like with the death scenes it’s between Alien and King Kong. Both these quotes send chills down my spine but in the end I love Ripley’s line more. Alien it is.

Best Quote: Alien

So, that’s it for my first challenge updates. Alien came out the strongest with two wins (coolest character and best quote). When I finish the next ten movies you can expect challenge update #2.

This is watchawatchin, signing off.

Challenge Update #1-3: Best Death Scene

A major part in horror movies is of course death and how the people die. It can be funny, over the top, gruesome or ridiculous. The first ten movies on the Top 500 Horror Movies list have a few good ones, I’ll try to uncover the best of them all! (Again, spoiler alert!)

Best Death Scene

Dracula – Dracula

Dracula, moments before his demise

This death occurs off-screen. The only indication that he’s dead is a moan, so it’s nothing special right? Wrong! The stake to the heart is a classic and everyone knows it. This is the movie that did it first but definitely not last.

The Evil Dead – Shelly

Surprisingly, for all the blood and gore, there aren’t a lot of kills in The Evil Dead so I didn’t have much choice. I decided on Shelly who, after she’s possessed, gets hacked into pieces by her boyfriend. The hacking itself isn’t shown but we do see the blood splashing on Ash and Scotty (the boyfriend).

Carrie – Mom

This death was more than satisfactory, I wanted this character to die after her first scene, and the death is great. Early in the movie we see Carrie praying to a statue of Jesus that is pierced with needles or something. When mommy’s time has finally come Carrie flings knives in her mother in the exact places as the needles in Jesus.

King Kong – Kong

Who doesn’t know that Kong climbed to the top of the empire state building only to fall to his death after being shot by tiny (for him) airplanes? Not many, I’ll tell you that. It’s iconic and also sad. That’s what makes this a great death.

Re-Animator – Melvin the Re-Animated

Bone saw is ready

He just came back to life and immediately gets killed again by his resurrector. That is the tragic tale of Melvin the Re-Animated. As he strangling Dan, Herbert West approaches from the back, electric bone saw (or whatever) in hand. Herbert proceeds by pushing the bone saw all the way through Melvin’s body. Ending it once again.

Halloween – Lynda

This isn’t about how she was killed but more the circumstances and what leads up to it. Michael appears before her disguised with a blanket and glasses. The glasses are from Lynda’s boyfriend so she naturally assumes it’s him. Michael remains silent and Lynda grows uneasy and starts calling Laurie. Laurie answers but only hears moaning and heavy breathing. She thinks it’s a joke but at the other end of the line Lynda’s being choked to death with the telephone wire. Thank god for cell phones.

Alien – Kane

He’d be a lot happier with a belly full of meat

For those of you who don’t remember this is the guy that had an abrupt c-section when the little alien wanted to come out, killing him in the process. This kill has it all; shock value, gore and it’s scary just thinking about it.

Black Christmas – Mrs. Mac

Booze isn’t the only thing she’s hooked on…

Looking for a cat in horror movies is never a good idea. When this booze hound heard the cat meowing from the attic she couldn’t help herself and had to go look. When she opened the trap door and saw the body of a missing girl she didn’t go down, no. She turned around in slow motion to see what else was in the attic. Lo’ and behold; it’s the killer with a hook in his hand! The hook comes flying in her neck and pulls her upward. She never found the cat…

Freaks – Hercules

Hercules got what he deserved when the Freaks started carving him up real nice. Too bad we never see or hear anything.

Nosferatu – The Captain

The captain never abandons ship! Not even when he’s the only one left and a creepy vampire is approaching him. To make sure that the ship reaches it’s destination the captain ties himself to the steering wheel and waits for Nosferatu to strike. When the ship reaches the dock he is found, still holding the steering wheel, but totally lifeless.

But which is the best of them all?

Carrie, King Kong and Alien are my favorites for this round. I’ll take Carrie out of the race because the other two are more well known and iconic. The chestburster is awesome but Kong’s is touching. This isn’t an easy decision but I’m going for the big ape; Kong.

Best Death Scene: Kong

Tomorrow I’ll look for the best quote!

Challenge Update #1-2: Scariest Antagonist

My next search is for the scariest of them all… Muahahahaha! We’ve got quite the assortment here today; vampires, lunatics, aliens and so much more. Everyone will find something they like! (Again, spoiler alert!)

Scariest antagonist

Dracula – Dracula

The most famous vampire of them all, sadly he’s not scary at all. But that has everything to do with the age of the movie. Times have changed and Bela’s Dracula just doesn’t work anymore. Lit eyes and funny hand gestures aren’t enough to scare people that were born after the fifties. We never even see his teeth… And that’s the scariest thing about a vampire!

The Evil Dead – Deadites

Look at that face, imagine one of your best friends turning into that! No eyes, blood gushing from the mouth and a gravely voice coming out of her throat screaming “Join us, join us!”. I wouldn’t hang around, that’s for sure.

Carrie – Carrie White

She doesn’t look as nice when she’s covered in pig’s blood right? Everything was fine until she was crowned prom queen and a bucket of blood fell down. Her eyes wide open and her mental powers on full automatic she starts closing the doors and mix water with electricity and that’s NOT a good combination (poor Cheswick). She goes on and blows up a car and ends up killing her mother. Probably not the best prom ever.

King Kong – Kong

You could say that the antagonist in King Kong is probably mankind, but I’m looking at this from mankind’s perspective. So, Kong it is. Having a giant primate walking around your town will probably make you pack your backs and get out as fast as you can (except if it’s Optimus Prime). When an animal is afraid, and Kong was definitely afraid, they go wild and start to rampage. A lot of people could die and he is probably the most dangerous one on this list. But the scariest? I don’t think so, he’s to damn cuddly!

Re-Animator – Dr. Carl Hill

The resident asshole and pervert at the medical college. After he tries to steal Herbert West’s notes and experiments he gets his head chopped of… only to return as a re-animated corpse. He goes on to create an army of undead soldiers but the worst thing he does is give head (get it?) to the hero’s girl. It’s the worst thing because it’s just wrong on so many  levels.

Halloween – Michael Myers

A real lunatic who will stop at nothing to kill sexy teenagers. The creepy white mask, overall and kitchen knife make for one creepy villain. The way he stalks his victims (appearing so we can see him, but the victim not) is very effective in scaring the crap out of people. Another thing that contributes to his creepiness is his silence and the cool, collective way he kills people. Without emotion.

Alien – The Alien

What starts out as a cute little chestburster ends up as one of the most terrifying things mankind can encounter; an indestructible alien who uses us for reproducing. It hunts like a lion would, it stalks it victims and strikes when they are separated from their pack. Trust me, you don’t want to end up on this guy’s (girl’s?) wall.

Black Christmas – Creepy Stalker Dude

Nobody knows what he looks like or why he stalks the girls at the sorortiy house but that just makes him creepier. That and the fact that he calls them while he’s in the house. The calls themselves aren’t that scary, mostly they made me laugh or roll my eyes, but the kills are pretty sweet and make him a good contendor for the scariest antagonist.

Freaks – The Freaks

The villains in this movie are actually Cleopatra and Hercules but they don’t do any killing or are scary at all, so I chose the freaks. Throughout the movie they don’t do a whole lot but at the end they all grab a knife and hunt the two baddies. Even the guy with no arms or legs grabs a knife and starts wiggling after them.

Nosferatu – Count Orlok

Based on the same character as Dracula but instead of the charismatic count we get a creepy, bald version. Definitly more scary than Dracula and it holds up surprisingly well, even 90 years later. The use of shadows and the excellent performance by Max Shreck make this a pretty scary movie.

But who is the scariest of them all?

This is for me personally but I can’t stand Michael Myers. Is it the silence or his appearance? I don’t know, I just know that I feel really uneasy while watching Halloween.

Scariest of them all: Michael Myers

Tomorrow I’ll look for the best death scene!

Challenge Update #1-1: Coolest Character

If you went to my Current Challenge page you’ll know that I have finished the first ten movies on the list. I’m not going to review them or decide wich one is the better movie, no. These are horror movies and I’m going to rate things that matter in horror films. Namely: Best death scene, coolest character, scariest antagonist and best quote. So keep in mind that this post is definitely not spoiler free. The movies are; Dracula, The Evil Dead, Carrie, King Kong, Re-Animator, Halloween, Alien, Black Christmas, Freaks and Nosferatu. Let’s start with…

Coolest Character

Dracula – Van Helsing

The original vampire slayer, Dr. Van Helsing. When he discovers that Dracula is vampire does he panic? No, he challenges him by showing him a mirror. And let’s face it, he doesn’t have a lot of competition. Van Helsing is definitely the coolest.

The Evil Dead – Ash

Well? What did you expect? Not only is Ash the coolest character in this movie, but he is probably one of the coolest characters of all time. This is the first one, however, and Ash isn’t quite the Ash with the boomstick yet. Still… Pretty awesome.

Carrie – Carrie White

Most of the characters in this movie are so unlikable that you just want to punch them in the face or kick them in the groin. Luckily we have Carrie White, the psychic pubescent teen. Sure she goes absolutely mental at the end and for the rest she doesn’t say much but still… The way she goes crazy is pretty awesome.

King Kong – Kong

It’s a giant monkey, it doesn’t get much cooler than that. Want more reasons? He kills a T-Rex and uses people as toothpicks. I rest my case.

Re-Animator – Herbert West

He may appear a little strange but don’t worry, he is perfectly normal. Resurrecting things is just a hobby! Seriously though, this guy is so nice that he will revive your favorite pet after it got it’s head stuck in a jar and suffocated.

Halloween – Dr. Samuel Loomis

He’s a doctor, but thet’s just a job on the side. If you ask me he’s a bit of a superhero mixed with a little child. Example of the hero: he saves the girl at the end. Example of the little child: he scares the crap out of some trick or treating children.

Alien – Ripley

Just like Ash, what did you expect? Ripley remains cool and collected through most of the movie while the other crew members go bananas or break down. Another thing about her is that she’s smart and badass, not just another scream queen.

Black Christmas – Lt. Fuller

Well, I haven’t a lot to say except that he is the only character in this movie that I find remotely “cool”. He knows what fellatio means and he carries a gun. That’s it.

Freaks – Phroso

The nicest and funniest guy in the movie. He is the clown in the circus and he often practises his tricks by his trailer. One of them involves a big suit and a hammer. Another one a bathtub without bottom with wheels. And to top it all of he makes it with the prettiest girl in the circus, who says girls aren’t attracted to a man with a sense of humor?

Nosferatu – First Mate

Definitely not his most flattering pose but the only one I could find. This guy does the most courageous thing in the movie; after the entire crew, except him and the captain, have been killed by an unknown entity below deck he goes to check it out, axe in hand. Sure, he jumps of the ship but that was only after he witnessed the creepiest scene in the entire movie!

But who is the coolest of them all?

In the end it came down to Ash and Ripley. Both Ash and Ripley live on and become tougher and more awesome in their sequels. But who is the coolest in the first movies? Ash has to kill his zombie friends and pretty much loses it. Ripley loses her friends one by one and ends up killing the alien in her underwear. The key here is that Ash loses it, That gives Ripley the edge. Ripley wins.

Coolest of them all: Ellen Ripley

Tomorrow I’ll look for the scariest antagonist!
